THE SEVEN SEALS

For P.L. (1954-2024)
When all six of my black-haired, green-eyed, seal-sleek brothers disappeared, I drove up the coast to look for them.
I woke at dawn, sensing something was wrong—a certain weight to the fog, a melancholy in the song of the blue glass wind chimes—and my brothers were not in their beds in the sage-green Santa Monica Craftsman house with the glassed-in sun porch draped in morning glories; their cell phones were gone, the yellow VW van gone. They had left a note:
Jude, we will be back. Go to school. Don’t try to look for us. The fridge is stocked. WE LOVE YOU. Matthew, Mark, John, James, Andrew & Thomas
I usually did whatever my brothers said, but after I texted them and received no response, I packed some water, got into the blue VW Bug with my brother Thomas’s extra surfboard attached to the top, and went looking.
